OpenAI's Dot assistant can now text you, but only in the US

OpenAI's Dot assistant can now text you first with updates and alerts, but only for Pro users in the US. Messages pass through a third party, so keep private details out.

OpenAI's Dot assistant can now send you text messages. You can hand it a task or ask it to watch something for you, and it will message you with updates. The feature was announced on October 28, 2026, and for now it is a preview for Pro users in the US only.

What changed

Until now, Dot lived inside ChatGPT. Now you can reach it by text, using words, images or voice notes. Dot can also start the conversation. It can report progress on a task or send an alert about something you asked it to monitor.

Only the account holder can message Dot, and Dot replies only to that person. Its memory is shared between ChatGPT and your text threads, so a task started in the app can carry over into the chat.

How to turn it on

  • Open the Dot profile in ChatGPT and select the Texting option.
  • On an iPhone, iMessage must be switched on.
  • On Android, RCS must be switched on. RCS is the newer, more capable successor to SMS.
  • Plain SMS does not work, according to the OpenAI Help Center.

The privacy catch

OpenAI delivers the texts through a partner called Linq. Because of that, the chats are not fully private. As reported by Techstrong, OpenAI ran penetration testing, which means trying to break in to find weak spots. Even so, the conversations pass through a third party.

The advice is simple. Do not send passport details or financial information in these chats.

Who can use it

The preview is for US Pro users. The Pro plan has been reported at anywhere from $100 to $200 a month, so check OpenAI's pricing page before you sign up.

Business Premium plans reportedly include Dot in all supported regions, including the UK, at a higher price than Pro. But texting is a US-only beta, so UK customers should not expect it yet.

What happens next

OpenAI has not given a timeline for bringing texting to other countries. The feature is also a test of agents that act on their own. That raises questions about how much freedom such tools should get. Wikimedia has raised concerns about AI agents said to be linked to OpenAI editing its wikis.

Anthropic is taking a similar US-first path with Claude Duet, which is available through a waitlist. People outside the US should expect to wait for both services.

The takeaway

Dot's texting is a US-only Pro preview, and since a third party carries the messages, keep passport and bank details out of it.
