OpenAI's AI models are coming to Google's cloud, too

OpenAI's GPT models are headed to Google's cloud in the coming weeks, so businesses can use them on all three top cloud providers.

OpenAI will make its AI models available through Google's cloud in the coming weeks. That means the company behind ChatGPT now has its technology on all three of the biggest cloud providers: Amazon, Microsoft and Google. The cloud is simply rented computing power that companies use instead of running their own servers.

What changed

OpenAI's GPT products will show up in Google Cloud's model garden, which works like a menu of AI models that developers can pick from. They will also come to Antigravity, Google's coding tool. OpenAI said in a blog post that Google Cloud has become a destination for AI work and the people building it.

This follows a quick series of moves. Less than six months ago, OpenAI said Microsoft would no longer hold the exclusive license to its technology. The day after that ended, Amazon announced plans to host OpenAI models. Now Google is next.

Why Google is a notable partner

Google and OpenAI are rivals. OpenAI was founded in 2015 partly as a counterweight to the concentration of AI research at companies like Google. Google also builds its own AI models, called Gemini, and announced its next version, Gemini 4 Argon, in September.

They are not strangers, though. Last year OpenAI said it was using Google's cloud to run ChatGPT and its developer connection tool. Google's cloud business has also been growing fast. Its annualized revenue growth reached about 82% in the second quarter, up from 63% in the first. Amazon grew 37% and Microsoft 42%.

Who it affects

The direct audience is corporate developers and the IT teams that buy AI tools. Data from corporate card issuer Ramp shows most business spending on AI goes to OpenAI and Anthropic. Companies that already run on Google's cloud may not need to switch providers just to use OpenAI models.

For everyday users, nothing changes today. The benefit is indirect: more choice for businesses can mean less lock-in and more room to negotiate.

What is not known yet

  • The exact launch date beyond the coming weeks.
  • Which specific GPT models will be offered.
  • What the models will cost on Google's cloud.

What happens next

All three cloud companies report quarterly results next week, which may show how much demand AI is driving. OpenAI is also courting investors at a $1.4 trillion valuation and targeting an initial public offering. Wider distribution to business customers is central to that plan.

The takeaway

If your business buys AI tools, you can now choose a cloud for other reasons and still expect access to OpenAI models.
