What happenedOpenAI announced that the ChatGPT Classic desktop app will retire on January 30, 2027.
Who is affectedAnyone still using ChatGPT Classic on a Mac or Windows computer, including people on the Free plan and on paid plans.
What to do
  1. 1Download the new ChatGPT desktop app for macOS or Windows.
  2. 2Sign in with the same OpenAI account you use in ChatGPT Classic.
  3. 3Check that your past conversations appear in the new app.
  4. 4Finish the switch well before January 30, 2027.

OpenAI has set a date to shut down the old ChatGPT desktop app. The app, now called ChatGPT Classic, stops working on January 30, 2027. If you still use it on a Mac or Windows computer, you need to move to the newer ChatGPT desktop app before then. Your past chats are not lost.

What changed

OpenAI renamed the earlier desktop app ChatGPT Classic on July 9. That was when the Codex app merged into ChatGPT, and Chat, Work and Codex moved into one app for Mac and Windows. Chat is for questions and back-and-forth. Work is for finished results like decks and reports. Codex has its own view and history. OpenAI did not force anyone to switch at launch. Now it has put an end date on Classic.

Who it affects

Anyone still using ChatGPT Classic is affected, whether on the Free plan or a paid plan. The new app is available on every ChatGPT plan, including Free. Work and Codex were never part of Classic, so people who stayed on it have been missing those features.

Who can relax

Your chats belong to your OpenAI account, not to the app. OpenAI says the new app shows the same conversations you had in Classic. If you already use the new app, nothing changes for you. Web users are not mentioned in the announcement.

What to do

The steps are in the alert box above. In short, download the new app, sign in with the same account, and confirm your old chats show up. About three months remain, so there is no need to rush, but waiting until the last week is a bad idea if your team relies on it.

What happens next

OpenAI plans to test a merged Chat and Work experience with a small group of users in the coming weeks. Today you pick a mode with a toggle at the top of the ChatGPT view. Greg Brockman said in July that the Work tab should go away by the end of 2026, with its features folding into regular ChatGPT. Codex stays separate.

Usage limits are changing too. ChatGPT and Codex will share one usage allowance instead of two separate limits. OpenAI says most people will not wait for a reset more often than they do now. Heavier models and complex tasks use more of the allowance, while Unlimited Instant stays included in your plan without drawing from it.

One early reviewer says the new Mac app still feels slow and bloated compared with a native app. OpenAI has not addressed that in this announcement.

The takeaway

If you use ChatGPT Classic, install the new ChatGPT desktop app and confirm your chats appear before January 30, 2027.
