What happenedOpenAI says ChatGPT and Codex will share one usage allowance, tracked in tokens, on its Plus, Pro and Business plans from December 2026.
Who is affectedPaying users of ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Business, especially people who also use Codex for coding or run complex tasks.
What to do
  1. 1Check which ChatGPT plan you or your team pays for.
  2. 2Note how often you use advanced models or long, complex tasks.
  3. 3Watch for OpenAI's announcement of exact allowances and the start date.
  4. 4Plan big jobs around reset times once the limits are published.

OpenAI plans to put ChatGPT and Codex on one shared usage allowance for Plus, Pro and Business subscribers, starting in December 2026. If you pay for either tool, your bigger jobs could use up your limit faster than you expect.

What changed

Both services will be tracked in tokens, which are small chunks of text an AI reads and writes. One shared pool will cover ChatGPT and Codex. OpenAI is making the move as it brings the agentic features of ChatGPT Work, meaning tools that handle multi-step tasks, into the main ChatGPT experience.

Not every request counts the same. Advanced models and complex tasks use more tokens. Instant chat stays outside the shared allowance.

Who can relax

OpenAI expects most users will not have to wait for resets more often than they do now. People who mostly use quick, instant chat are the least likely to notice a change. The ones to watch are heavy users of advanced models, long or complex tasks, and anyone who also relies on Codex.

The pushback

Tech commentator Mark Valorian criticized the plan on X. He said a shared meter could undercut the unrestricted feel that made ChatGPT appealing, calling it an "all-you-can-think buffet" for research and experimenting.

He said his concern was not mainly about money. Buying a separate $20 ChatGPT subscription and saving his existing usage for Codex would still be affordable. His worry is that tracking usage and scheduling work around resets could discourage spontaneous exploration.

Valorian guessed at three reasons: encouraging more usage, making more revenue, or dealing with people who take advantage of current allowances. OpenAI has not confirmed any of them.

What to do

The steps in the alert box above cover it. Know which plan you pay for, notice how often you run demanding tasks, and watch for OpenAI's details.

What is still unknown

OpenAI has not shared the exact token amounts in each plan. It has also not given a specific December start date. Until those numbers are public, there is no way to tell how much room your own work will have.

The takeaway

Check your plan and how you use ChatGPT and Codex now, then wait for OpenAI to publish the exact allowances before planning big jobs.
