OpenAI Is Buying a Small Company That Helps Teams Review Code

OpenAI plans to buy Pierre Computer Company, whose code review tools already run inside Codex, a sign that AI coding is shifting toward checking code, not just writing it.

OpenAI has agreed to buy Pierre Computer Company, a maker of tools that help developers browse, store and review software code. Some of those tools already run inside Codex, OpenAI's AI coding app. The deal is not final yet. It still needs regulatory approval.

What Pierre makes

Pierre's best-known tools are Trees and Diffs. Both are open-source, meaning the code is public and anyone can use it. Trees lets developers browse project files and understand the layout of a large software project. Diffs shows the differences between two versions of code, so reviewers can see what changed.

  • Edit mode in Diffs lets developers fix single lines right inside the comparison view.
  • Highlights colors code as it is typed and is built to keep up with AI-generated code.
  • Code Storage lets apps store code and track changes through Git without building their own system.

Why OpenAI wants it

AI coding agents can now create branches, change files and submit updates at the same time. A branch is a separate copy of the code where changes are tried out. That produces a lot of activity for people to sort through. OpenAI believes the usual setup for software teams has to change to handle it.

The purchase follows OpenAI's recent announcement of Pando, its own system for handling Git, a common way to track code changes, at large scale for engineers and AI agents. OpenAI expects Pando and Pierre's tools to work together from first coding through review and release.

What stays the same

OpenAI says Pierre's open-source projects will stay open-source and that it plans to keep contributing to them. Current Code Storage customers can keep using the service while OpenAI folds it into Codex. Until the deal closes, the two companies remain separate and independent.

What it means for businesses

If your business builds software, the focus of AI tools is widening. Writing code is only one part. Tracking, organizing and reviewing what AI writes is becoming just as important, and OpenAI wants Codex to cover that work with people staying in charge of decisions.

Some details are not known yet. The material does not give a price or a closing date, and it does not say when Code Storage will appear inside Codex.

The takeaway

AI coding tools are adding ways to track and review the code they write, and OpenAI is buying Pierre to build that into Codex.
