OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has cut the amount of money it is asking investors for by $10 billion. The Financial Times reported the change on Friday. The Information also covered it. The company first aimed to raise $30 billion in this round, so the new target would be about $20 billion.

What changed

A funding round is when a company sells small ownership stakes to investors in exchange for cash. OpenAI's first plan valued the company at $1.4 trillion. Valuation is the price tag investors put on the whole business. According to the report, OpenAI lowered that valuation last week, and the smaller raise follows.

The feed text cuts off before it gives the new valuation, so that figure is not confirmed here.

Why it matters

If you use AI tools at work or budget for them, this is a useful signal. Even the biggest AI company is adjusting how much money it asks for. That does not mean your tools are going away. It does show that big AI plans can shift.

What is not known yet

  • The new, lower valuation number.
  • Why OpenAI changed its plan.
  • Which investors are in the round, and whether it will close.
The takeaway

OpenAI is now seeking $10 billion less than the $30 billion it first wanted, so keep an eye on AI costs and plans.
