OpenAI is buying Pierre Computer Company, a startup whose tools already run inside Codex, OpenAI's AI coding agent. An agent is an AI that carries out tasks on its own. The deal is about helping human developers and AI agents work on the same code at the same time.

What Pierre makes

Pierre is the company behind Code Storage and several open-source tools. Open source means the code is public for anyone to use. Code Storage stores code and tracks its history through Git, a system developers use to record every change to a project. Pierre's three named tools are:

  • Trees: fast navigation of a project's files.
  • Diffs: shows code changes and lets users fix bugs right in that view.
  • Highlights: colors code in real time as developers type or an AI agent writes it.

What is not known yet

OpenAI says the goal is to make Git workflows work better when developers and agents write code side by side. As agents take on more tasks in parallel, the tools around Git have to keep up. OpenAI already runs Pando, its own version control backend built for both developers and agents.

Pierre's open-source projects will stay open source. The deal still needs regulatory approval. The material does not give a price or a closing date. For businesses that build software, the likely result is tools that let AI helpers and developers share one project, which may speed up work.

The takeaway

OpenAI is buying the startup behind Codex's code tools, so expect AI helpers and developers to share projects more easily once regulators approve.
