Nvidia is backing the risky bills of the firms that rent out its chips

Nvidia may guarantee billions in financing for a data center built for Anthropic, a sign that the firms renting out AI computing are leaning hard on borrowed money.

Nvidia is acting like a cosigning parent for the young companies that rent out its chips. It is reportedly in talks to guarantee construction financing for a West Virginia data center that one of those companies, Nscale, is building for Anthropic. If Nscale misses payments, Nvidia could be stuck with a multibillion-dollar building it never planned to run.

What neoclouds are and why they need help

Neoclouds are companies that rent out AI computing power. To do that, they must buy billions of dollars in chips and secure data center space to run them. Demand for AI is strong, but borrowing that much money has gotten harder.

Lenders worry about construction delays and power shortages. They fear young companies may not deliver on their plans or repay their debts. Those worries grew on Thursday, when neocloud stocks plunged amid concerns about tougher data center rules after the midterm elections and delays at big infrastructure projects for Microsoft.

What Nvidia is doing

In July, Nvidia launched a program with $36 billion in commitments. It promised to pay for computing capacity that goes unused, which makes it easier for neoclouds to borrow. In exchange, it took a cut of revenue. Nvidia has also invested in neoclouds and made other commitments to rent computing power if things go wrong.

Nvidia has its reasons. Neoclouds give it access to thousands of customers beyond Google, Microsoft and Amazon, which are building rival chips.

Limits and pushback

  • In August, Nvidia paused some deals in the program over antitrust concerns, The Wall Street Journal reported.
  • Nvidia said the program remained in place and was evolving.
  • GMI CEO Alex Yeh said the guarantee terms have changed three or four times, roughly every quarter.
  • Yeh also noted that even Nvidia has limited capital and must be selective.

Who it affects

Businesses that rent AI computing could feel any stumble in this chain. The AI boom rests on borrowed money, so trouble at a lender or a neocloud could raise prices or narrow choices.

Money is already flowing to the biggest neoclouds with proven records and major customers, said Billy Libby, CEO of the lender Upper90. Smaller players may struggle. Gartner predicts that about 80% of neoclouds will stop operating independently by 2030, as larger companies buy rivals or their assets.

What happens next

The Nscale guarantee is still reported as talks, not a done deal. It is also unclear how Nvidia will shape its program after the antitrust worries. Yeh said stronger firms may pick up chips, data center space, customer contracts and teams from struggling rivals. In his words, "I would acquire strategic assets."

The takeaway

If your business rents AI computing, ask providers how they are funded, since the firms behind the chips are leaning on borrowed money.
