Norton has added a new feature called Safe AI to Norton 360, its security software. It is meant to act as a safety layer for AI chat apps such as ChatGPT and Claude. Norton says it can block AI actions you did not intend, let you choose which personal files AI tools can open, and help you avoid risky links.
Why Norton says it is needed
Norton's parent company, Gen, says its Gen Threat Labs research found a 54% increase in harmful content served to Gen users through AI chatbots in the last 90 days. Gen also says more than two-thirds of people worry about privacy, data breaches or losing control when an AI assistant can act for them. The company's point is that AI tools should not be the only line of defense.
What it covers and what it does not
Safe AI has three parts: Safe Zone, Safe Links and Action Shield. Each has limits, according to Norton's own notes:
- Safe AI works on Windows and Mac.
- Safe Zone is available on Windows only.
- Safe Links supports ChatGPT and Claude in browser versions.
- Action Shield supports Claude, Cursor, OpenClaw and VS Code.
What is not known yet
The announcement does not say what Safe AI costs or whether it is included in every Norton 360 plan. It also does not explain how each part works in detail. Norton points readers to its Safe AI blog for more. The 54% figure and the survey result come from Gen and Norton, and the announcement does not describe how they were measured.
The takeawayIf you let AI tools open files or click links for you, Safe AI adds limits, but check that your apps and computer are on its supported list.
