Prophecy, a data preparation startup, launched DataGPT today. It lets business analysts run full data workflows from inside ChatGPT, Claude and Microsoft Copilot. Each answer comes with a visual map of the steps that produced it, so a person who cannot read code can still check the work. Individuals can start with a free account.

The habit it targets

In many finance and operations teams, an analyst uploads a spreadsheet to a chatbot and asks it to reconcile a quarter of transactions. This often happens without sign-off from the IT department. The chatbot answers by writing its own script. Prophecy says most people in those jobs cannot read code, so they take the numbers on trust. Closing the chat also wipes the logic, along with any revenue definitions or approved exceptions the user explained.

What it does

In one conversation, an analyst can load a messy Excel file and cross-check it against an audit list and records in SharePoint or Snowflake. A pricing rule for discounted product bundles can come next. Prophecy's own walkthrough ends with the workflow set to run every month without anyone rebuilding it.

  • Each stage appears on screen beside its results.
  • An analyst who spots a problem can fix that stage before approving.
  • No workflow goes on a schedule until a person has reviewed it.
  • Reruns follow saved code kept in Git and never call the AI model, so they add no AI cost.

What it means for IT

Uploaded files never sit inside the chat. They go through Prophecy to the company's own data platform, where IT staff can see every workflow and govern it like anything else they manage. Scheduled runs happen on Snowflake, Databricks or Google BigQuery, whichever the customer already uses. Prophecy pitches this as a way to bring shadow AI, meaning AI tools used without approval, under IT's control.

Availability

DataGPT is available today through the connector marketplaces in ChatGPT, Claude and Copilot. Companies that have not approved those AI tools can use it in Prophecy's own app. An administrator can also roll it out centrally. The material does not say what paid plans cost.

Who is behind it

Prophecy was founded in 2017 and has raised more than $100 million. It names SAP, HSBC Holdings and Pfizer among its customers. Founder and chief executive Raj Bains said developers already have AI that takes code to production, while business data users "got question answering, and nothing changed." Prophecy also cites a Gartner forecast that half of all organizations will adopt a zero-trust posture for data governance by 2028.

The takeaway

If staff already paste company numbers into chatbots, look for tools that show each step, need a human sign-off and keep IT able to see the work.
