Microsoft is removing most of the Copilot shortcuts that OneDrive added to the right-click menu in Windows File Explorer. The change starts in mid-November and should finish by early December. The AI tools themselves are not going away.
What changed
Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant. The shortcuts arrived with a September 2025 announcement, which promised help with files in a few clicks. The ones being removed cover summarizing documents, generating FAQs, comparing files and images, explaining images, extracting text and asking questions.
- "Ask Copilot" stays in the right-click menu for OneDrive files.
- The Copilot icon in File Explorer Home still works.
- The individual actions remain in the OneDrive activity center.
Microsoft said it is "simplifying how people use Copilot with their OneDrive files in File Explorer." The menu had grown crowded, with several Copilot options sharing identical icons. In March 2026, Windows boss Pavan Davuluri said: "We are reducing unnecessary Copilot entry points."
Who it affects
Anyone who uses these shortcuts to summarize files will need an extra click. Right-click the file, choose "Ask Copilot," and start a conversation with the file attached. Staff who rely on the shortcuts should be told that the steps change in late 2026. Only the rollout window has been given, so the exact day it reaches any one computer is not known.
The takeawayThe Copilot file shortcuts disappear from the right-click menu by early December, but "Ask Copilot" and the activity center still do the same jobs.
