Mastercard Wants AI Shopping Helpers to Pay With Your Real Card

Mastercard says AI shopping helpers should pay with a digital stand-in for your own card, not a throwaway card number. That means the rewards and spending controls on your card could follow you into AI-assisted checkout. CEO Michael Miebach said so on the company's earnings call Thursday, Oct. 29.

What changed

Some setups today give an AI agent a one-time virtual card number, a made-up number used for a single purchase. Miebach called that a bridge while payment processors, the companies that move money for merchants, get ready. "That's not a long-term solution that we will support," he said.

The alternative is a network token. It replaces your real card details but keeps the purchase tied to your actual card. Mastercard says this preserves your payment preferences, rewards and controls.

What is already happening

Mastercard Agent Pay uses tokens and checks that a shopper authorized the agent. Shopify's Shop Pay is using Agent Pay and Mastercard network tokens. A new OpenAI agreement also includes Agent Pay. Miebach expects shoppers to use AI agents more during the holiday season.

What is not known yet

The report does not say when processors will be ready for fully tokenized purchases. It also does not say what the new token features will cost. Chief Financial Officer Ling Hai named added token features for agents as an area for development and pricing. Shoppers will need to authorize the software acting for them, but how that approval will look was not described.
