Mastercard has launched a free cybersecurity learning platform for small and medium-sized businesses in Europe. It is called the Mastercard SME Academy: Cybersecurity, and the company announced it on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Mastercard says the lessons are practical and built for firms that lack time or technical staff.
What the lessons cover
- How to spot phishing, which means fake messages meant to trick you
- How data breaches happen
- How to respond to malware, meaning harmful software
- How to lower the risk of identity theft and impersonation
Mastercard's own research found that 64% of European small and medium-sized firms say cyber protection is a priority. Only 37% use tools like firewalls and antivirus software. Tulsi Narayan, a Mastercard executive, said many owners do not have the time or resources to handle a complex cyber landscape.
Where it is available
The platform starts in Ireland, Italy, Poland and the U.K. Mastercard says it will reach the rest of Europe next year. It is part of a pledge to bring free cybersecurity education to 10 million European small and medium-sized businesses by 2030.
The material does not say how long the lessons take, when each country gets access, or whether the platform will ever open outside Europe. A related PYMNTS report offers one useful habit: half of businesses that reported AI-enabled fraud said fake vendor emails were the problem they saw most often.
The takeawayFree lessons on phishing and fake requests are now rolling out to small European firms, so owners there should check whether their country is covered.
