Lyft will now have a driver bring back a phone you left in a ride. Nearly half of phones come back in under two hours, and about 80% are returned the same day, according to the figures reported. Members of Lyft Pink, the company's paid membership, pay nothing. Everyone else pays a ride fare.

What changed

Lyft added a return phone ride feature for riders who leave a phone behind. Before, getting a lost phone back could take several hours and sometimes up to a day. Now the return typically takes a couple of hours. For anyone who runs a business from their phone, that gap matters.

How it works

You do not need your lost phone to start the process. Use another device, such as a friend's phone or a laptop, and follow these steps:

  • Open the Lyft Help center.
  • Request a return ride for your phone.
  • Enter your location and the time you want it delivered.
  • Your assigned driver brings the phone to you.

Lyft says everything happens in the Help center. In its words, there is no swapping phone numbers with your driver or going back and forth over meetup times.

What it costs

The service is free for Lyft Pink members. Other riders pay for the return ride. The fare depends on distance, traffic and demand at the time. The material does not give a typical price, so the cost is hard to predict. Delays are also possible, since traffic or driver availability can slow a return.

What happens next

Lyft plans to add other items, including jackets, wallets and laptops, by the end of winter 2026. It has also teased a lost item detection system. That tool would alert riders when they leave something in a vehicle, possibly before they notice it is gone.

Not yet clear: the exact launch date, which cities have the service, and what a typical fare will be.

The takeaway

If you leave a phone in a Lyft, request a return ride from the Help center on another device, and expect to pay a fare unless you have Lyft Pink.
