Lyft is launching a new monthly plan called Lyft Go. It costs $9.99 a month and includes a DoorDash DashPass membership. It also comes with credits that can go toward future rides or delivery orders.
What it is
Lyft Go is a loyalty program, meaning a paid plan that rewards people who keep using the same service. DashPass is DoorDash's own membership for its food delivery app. Lyft is packaging that membership with its own ride credits in one monthly fee.
Why Lyft is doing it
The plan is aimed at Uber Technologies Inc., which already sells a rival subscription covering rides and food. Lyft says in effect that it wants to compete more evenly. A bundle gives people one more reason to open Lyft instead of Uber, and to stay.
Who it may suit
The plan looks built for people who use ride apps and order food delivery often. For them, a bundle could trim costs. For someone who takes a few rides a year, the credits may go unused, and then the fee is just another subscription.
What is not known yet
- How large the monthly credits are
- When the plan starts and where it is available
- What rules apply to using the credits
- Whether an existing DashPass subscriber can switch over
Until those details are public, it is hard to say how good a deal it is. Anyone tempted should compare the fee with what they now spend on rides and delivery.
The takeawayBefore signing up for Lyft Go, check whether you would actually use the credits and DashPass enough to cover $9.99 a month.
