Klarna, the pay later and digital finance company, has made a scam call check live worldwide. If someone phones claiming to be from Klarna, you can open the Klarna app and see whether the call is real. The company announced it in a press release on Thursday, Nov. 5.

How the check works

The tool is called Call Status Detection. During a call, a customer opens the app and looks at the banner at the top of the screen. Green means the call is verified. Amber means Klarna cannot verify the caller, and the customer should end the call.

  • Green banner: the call is verified.
  • Amber banner: hang up.
  • Available in all 26 markets where Klarna operates.

Why Klarna built it

Klarna first launched the tool in the Nordic region in September. The company says it has helped thousands of users verify calls. It follows Klarna Inbox, which lets customers check emails and texts. Klarna cited Nasdaq Verafin data showing scams and bank fraud took roughly $579 billion last year.

What is not known yet

The release, as reported, does not explain how the app decides whether a caller is genuine. It also does not say how many people have used the tool outside the Nordic region. Klarna's financial crime chief, Woody Malouf, said the aim is a simple check with no need to hunt for a phone number.

The takeaway

If a caller says they are from Klarna, open the app and check the banner, and hang up if it is amber.
