Instagram is dropping its private, locked messaging option. After May 8, 2026, end-to-end encryption will no longer be supported for Instagram direct messages, and existing encrypted chats will lose their protection. Meta says very few people used it. It points anyone who wants secure chats to WhatsApp.

What changed

Meta did not make a formal public announcement. The change appeared in an update to the Help Center, the company's support pages. End-to-end encryption means only the people in a chat can read it. Meta began testing it on Instagram in 2021. It was never turned on by default and was only offered in select regions.

Why Meta says it is doing this

Meta says it comes down to usage. Very few Instagram users switched on encrypted messaging, which made it hard to justify keeping. The company now treats its apps differently. Instagram is for casual social use, and WhatsApp is the privacy-focused option, where encryption remains a core feature.

Why privacy advocates are worried

Without encryption, Meta will be able to scan Instagram messages for illegal material on its own initiative. It will also be able to give legal authorities access to messages when they ask. Most governments have pushed for this kind of access, including to fight child sexual abuse material. Privacy advocates still raise serious concerns.

Experts have also asked whether unencrypted messages could be used to train AI models. They wonder if Meta might one day remove encryption from WhatsApp too. These are questions, not confirmed plans.

What to do

  • Look for the in-app instructions for downloading messages and media you want to keep.
  • Update the Instagram app first if it is an older version, since exporting may require it.
  • Move sensitive conversations to WhatsApp or another app that still encrypts messages.
  • Assume regular Instagram messages can be read by Meta after the deadline.

What is not known yet

Meta has not said whether encrypted voice and video calls on Instagram are affected. It has also not said whether similar changes are planned for Facebook Messenger. Security-focused messaging apps may attract people who want stronger privacy as a result of the change.

The takeaway

Save any Instagram chats you want to keep before May 8, 2026, and move sensitive conversations to an app that still encrypts them.
