Google's Gemini Notebook app can now record audio on your phone. The feature is rolling out on Android and iOS. A recording can run up to one hour, and it keeps going if you lock your screen or switch to another app.
How it works
A new microphone icon sits between the camera and the "Create New" button. Tap it from the home screen and the recording becomes a new notebook. Tap it from the Sources tab inside an existing notebook and the audio is added there instead.
The recorder is simple. It has a pause button, a checkmark that starts the upload when you finish, and a waveform with a live timer above. Google says your notes sit next to your sources, so you can chat with them, cite them and keep editing.
What is not clear
Google first announced the recorder in September. The rollout is described as wide, but if you do not see the icon, force stopping the app may bring it up. The material does not say what the feature costs or which phone versions are supported.
Two other recent changes are worth knowing. Tapping "Create New" now starts a new notebook right away. A Live button in the Chat tab also lets you talk with your notebooks in real time.
The takeawayIf the new microphone icon is missing in Gemini Notebook, force stop the app and reopen it.
