Google Cloud has added a second way to run Anthropic's Claude AI models. Companies can now pick an option run by Anthropic or one run by Google. The price and the bill are the same. The real difference is who handles your data and how soon you get new Claude features.
What changed
Google Cloud already offered Claude with Google running the setup. Now it has announced general availability of an Anthropic-managed option too. General availability means it is open to customers, not a test. Google says both options give access to the latest Claude models on the day they launch.
The two options
The key term is data processor. That is the company responsible for handling your data on your behalf. Each option names a different one.
- Anthropic-managed: Anthropic is the data processor, under Anthropic's terms of service.
- Google-managed: Google is the data processor, under your existing Google Cloud customer agreements.
The Anthropic-managed option gets new Claude platform features right away. Google names Claude Managed Agents (in beta), skills and code execution. Companies still sign in with Google Cloud's identity tools, keep audit logs and pay through their Google Cloud bill.
The Google-managed option adds controls aimed at strict rules on governance and compliance. These include VPC Service Controls, customer-managed encryption keys, and data residency in the U.S., EU and APAC. It also connects to Google tools such as BigQuery and Model Armor. The tradeoff is that new Claude platform features arrive over time, after Google builds them into its own setup.
Who it affects
This matters most to businesses that already use Google Cloud and want Claude inside it. Both options draw on the same Google Cloud billing and eligible spending commitments. So the choice is less about cost and more about control versus speed.
Google lists these models as available either way: Claude Fable 5.1, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 and Opus 5.5. It says they cover reasoning, coding and multi-modal work, meaning more than just text.
What is not clear
Google does not say how long new features will take to reach the Google-managed option. It also gives no price figures in this announcement, only that pricing is the same. Businesses with strict data rules should read the terms of each option before choosing.
The takeawayIf your company uses Claude on Google Cloud, choose between earliest access to new features and keeping your data under Google's agreements.
