GitHub has folded its AI coding helper, Copilot, into GitHub Enterprise, its top plan for businesses. Companies that work with a GitHub or Microsoft account team can now get Copilot for every licensed user. GitHub is the service where many software teams store and manage their code.
What changed
Before, companies had two things to track: how many Copilot seats they paid for, and how much AI usage those people racked up. Now the main thing to manage is usage against the company budget.
Copilot through GitHub Enterprise has the same features and models as Copilot Enterprise. The difference is that it does not include monthly AI credits per seat. Usage is metered from the first request, using the policies, alerts and attribution a company already has. There is no included allowance to track or top up.
Staff in the same company account who do not hold a GitHub Enterprise license can get the same access through Copilot Standalone, at $10 per user per month. Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise remain available.
What is not known yet
Self-serve availability is coming in stages, and current self-serve subscriptions are not affected. The announcement does not give dates for those stages. It also does not say what each AI request costs, so the account team and GitHub's billing documentation are the places to check.
The takeawayIf your business pays for GitHub, find out how Copilot usage is now billed, because every AI request counts against your budget from the start.
