GitHub lets teams share AI helpers that do routine work for them

GitHub now lets teams build shared Copilot Automations, so one AI helper can do routine work for everyone, but an admin has to turn on billing first.

GitHub is rolling out shared Copilot Automations. Until now, these AI helpers belonged to one person. Now a whole team can build and maintain them together. The announcement came on October 28, 2026, and it is aimed at teams that write software.

What changed

Copilot Automations let you combine prompts (written instructions), triggers (events that start the work) and tools to design a workflow. Copilot then runs on its own in the cloud and uses only the tools you have allowed.

Before, only you could see and edit your automations, and they used your identity and your AI credits. That suits personal chores, such as drafting standup updates. It does not suit work a whole team relies on.

What it takes to use them

  • Choose Shared under Type when you create an automation on github.com, in the GitHub Copilot app or in Visual Studio Code.
  • You cannot change an automation's type after you create it.
  • You can create one in any repository where you have write access.
  • In an organization's repository, an administrator must first enable the policy called "Allow use of Copilot cloud agent billed to the organization."

Who gets it and what is unknown

The rollout covers Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise plans. GitHub says availability may vary as the rollout continues. The announcement does not give prices or say how much running an automation will cost, so teams should check with their administrator before relying on it.

The takeaway

If your team uses GitHub, ask an admin about the billing policy, since shared automations will not run in company repositories without it.
