GitHub Copilot can now create and edit images for your project

GitHub Copilot can now make and edit images from a plain-language request and save them in your project, but the usage counts against your AI credits.

GitHub Copilot, the AI assistant for writing software, can now create and edit images. Describe what you want in a chat, and the image shows up right there and is saved to your project. GitHub announced the change on October 28, 2026.

What changed

Before, getting a picture while working in Copilot meant leaving for a separate tool, explaining the request again, then moving the file back by hand. Now the AI model you chose for the chat passes the job to a dedicated image tool called GPT Image 2.5 Flare. You see a preview in the chat, and the file lands in your project.

  • Works in VS Code, the GitHub Copilot app and Copilot CLI
  • Open a Copilot chat and describe the image you want
  • Public preview, so it is still an early version

Who it affects and the cost

It is available to Copilot Pro, Copilot Pro+, Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise users. Teams building apps or websites may find it handy for simple visuals.

Images are billed separately from the chat model. The charge is based on image tokens, which are units of image usage, and they count toward your plan's AI credits. Heavy image use could use up credits faster.

What is not known yet

The announcement does not say how many credits an image costs, whether there are limits on image size or number, or when the preview will end. Anyone trying it may want to watch their credit balance while testing.

The takeaway

Copilot can now make images inside your project, but each one draws on your AI credits, so keep an eye on usage during the preview.
