Braid, a startup based in The Hague in the Netherlands, has raised about $38M, or 34.13 million euros. The money comes from a Series A round led by Octopus Ventures. Braid makes software that lets a company sell mobile data plans under its own name, without building a phone network.

What Braid does

Braid offers an API, which is a tool that lets one company's software plug into another's. Through it, a business can connect to more than 600 mobile carriers. The plans are eSIM plans. An eSIM is a digital SIM card built into a phone, so there is no tiny plastic card to swap.

Why the funding matters

A Series A is a funding stage for a young company that is starting to grow. Octopus Ventures leading the round suggests investors see demand for branded connectivity. The material does not say how Braid will spend the money.

Who it could touch

Your bank, airline or favorite app may someday offer its own mobile or travel data plan. A business could add one without running any network equipment. For customers, that could mean buying data in an app they already trust.

What is not known yet

The takeaway

Braid's $38M round points to more brands selling their own eSIM data plans, though prices, partners and timing are not yet public.
