Thrive Holdings, a company backed by OpenAI, is buying home security firm ADT. The companies announced the deal on Thursday. Thrive will pay $10 per share, about $7.6 billion in equity. Counting debt, ADT says the full deal value is $15.3 billion.

Who is buying ADT

Thrive Holdings was spun out of Thrive Capital, the venture capital firm led by Josh Kushner. Its goal is to hold companies for the long term and revitalize them with AI. It says it holds over 75 companies. OpenAI is both a partner and an investor. As a partner, OpenAI supplies AI models and technology, plus engineers who work directly inside Thrive's companies.

The press release said ADT will form the foundation of Thrive Holdings' smart home security business.

What is not known yet

Neither company named any new AI security products. They only said they plan to invest in and release new ones. The reporting does not say when, what they will do, or how camera footage and other customer data will be handled.

ADT already partners with Apple and Google and is expected to keep doing so. The deal comes as big tech moves into the same space. Apple just launched smart home and security products with LG and Schneider Electric. Amazon updated its smart home line, including new AI-powered cameras.

For current ADT customers, nothing changes today based on what has been announced. AI features may arrive later, so it is worth watching for updates from ADT about new products and any changes to how your data is used.

The takeaway

ADT customers can expect AI features eventually, so watch for notices about new products and how your camera data is handled.
