Anthropic's Claude can now link to your bank accounts and answer questions about your spending. It only reads your data, and it is limited to paid plans.

Anthropic has added a personal finance feature to its Claude assistant. It connects to your bank accounts, tracks spending and subscriptions, and answers questions about your money. It is read-only, so it cannot move or invest your funds. The company announced it on Thursday, Nov. 5. It is a beta feature, and only paid subscribers can use it.

What it does

Claude connects through Plaid, a network that links apps to bank accounts. It can link up to 16 U.S. banks. It reads balances, credit limits and up to 24 months of transactions. On investment, loan and card accounts, it sees balances and limits but not holdings, trades, rates or terms.

Anthropic said the feature has no ads or sponsored recommendations. It also offers no credit cards, loans or savings accounts of its own.

What to watch for

  • Claude's figures can differ from your bank's.
  • Balances can be a day or two old.
  • An account linked through two logins may be counted twice.

On privacy, Anthropic said conversations inside the Personal Finance hub are not used to train its models. OpenAI says ChatGPT's finance chats follow whatever training setting the user chose.

How it compares with ChatGPT

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Finances in May, nearly six months earlier. It shows net worth over time and portfolio allocation, and it builds budgets and debt payoff plans. OpenAI has since added Experian credit reports and scores, and opened Finances to Free and Go users. Claude starts with fewer investment and credit features.

Use is uneven. PYMNTS Intelligence found 15% of consumers used ChatGPT for money management in July through September, down from 17% the quarter before. Claude rose from 3% to 4%. The report pools 31,447 responses from U.S. consumers.

What happens next

Anthropic said it is exploring how Claude can work with licensed professionals and regulated firms on bigger money decisions. It asked banks and wealth managers to help shape that work, but named no partner. The launch comes ahead of Anthropic's planned Nasdaq debut.

People want advice more than a handoff. The same report found 24% of consumers used AI for money management from May to September, while 16% were interested in letting AI directly manage their money.

The takeaway

If you try Claude's finance tool, treat its numbers as a rough guide and check your bank for the exact balance.
