ChatGPT's chat and coding tools will soon share one usage limit

OpenAI plans to merge ChatGPT's Chat and Work modes, and a logo request could soon count against the same allowance as heavy coding work.

OpenAI plans to merge ChatGPT's two modes, Chat and Work, into one experience. Image requests run through Work or Codex, its coding tool, would then draw from the same usage pool as coding. Startup Fortune reports the shared pool arrives in December. The executive who described the plan gave no firm date.

What changed

Tibo Sottiaux, who runs ChatGPT and Codex at OpenAI, described the plan on Lenny Rachitsky's podcast in early October. Chat is the fast mode most people use for everyday questions. Work is the slower mode built for long jobs like research or multi-step coding tasks.

Plain chat on the fast, default model stays outside the metered pool, according to OpenAI's help documentation. Work, Codex and other heavy tasks draw from one shared allowance. Image generation in a regular Pro chat has been marketed as effectively unlimited. Run through Work or Codex, it would use up the shared pool.

Who it affects

Light users will likely barely notice. A student summarizing a reading list touches the new pool very little. Heavy users are different. A founder who drafts a deck, debugs code, makes a logo and runs a long research task in one day could hit a shared ceiling that did not exist in this form before.

Teams are the other group to watch. If a company pays for Plus or Pro seats per employee, a graphic made by a marketer and a code change run by an engineer could compete for the same monthly allowance.

What is not known yet

  • The exact date. Sottiaux gave none on the podcast.
  • How usage will be counted under the new rules.
  • What happens to the model picker, the menu for choosing a model.

Those open questions drove the online reaction. Reddit threads on r/codex and r/OpenAI passed 500 and 370 votes within hours of the podcast clip spreading on X. Nearly every top comment asked how the counting will work. Some users floated cancelling Plus.

Why this is happening

OpenAI is not alone. Microsoft said on its fiscal Q4 2026 earnings call that it is merging its consumer and enterprise Copilot apps into one application. Anthropic has folded its Cowork feature into Chat. Each merger has come with a closer look at what each feature costs to run.

Demand is also high. OpenAI said on July 21 that Codex and ChatGPT Work together passed 10 million weekly active users. The number doubled in two weeks after ChatGPT Work launched on July 9. Computing power is the real constraint, and metering is how these companies are starting to price it.

What to do

If you pay for ChatGPT for a team, note who uses Work, Codex and image tools most. Wait for OpenAI to publish the counting rules before changing plans or budgets. Until then, assume creative and coding work may share one monthly allowance.

The takeaway

If your team pays for ChatGPT, assume image and coding work may share one monthly allowance, and wait for OpenAI's counting rules before changing plans.
