ChatGPT wins blind tests for AI images, but Gemini is the better deal

Blind votes put ChatGPT's image tool on top, but Gemini offers a stronger free tier and cheaper plans for people who just need good pictures.

If you want the best AI-made pictures, ChatGPT is the one most people picked in blind tests. If you want a good result without paying much, Gemini is the better deal. Grok is fast and bold. Claude does not make photos or illustrations at all. That is the picture from blind human-preference rankings and independent testing, as reported by International Business Times Australia.

What the tests found

ChatGPT uses OpenAI's GPT Image 2 model, released April 21, 2026. In LLM Stats' October rankings, based on more than 11,000 blind human votes, it scored 506. Grok's image model came second at 362. On the Artificial Analysis leaderboard, GPT Image 2 had a rating of 1,339, the biggest lead over second place that board has recorded.

Reviewers praise ChatGPT for following complicated instructions and for letting people fix an image by describing the change. It has also improved at readable text inside images, which helps with posters, product mockups and marketing graphics.

Where Gemini fits

Gemini uses Google's image models, nicknamed Nano Banana. Its faster model, Nano Banana 2, ranked fifth on the Artificial Analysis board with a rating of 1,254. That trails ChatGPT but stays competitive with other top models.

The bigger story is price. Testers call Gemini the easiest free place to start. One comparison estimated its free tier allows about twice as many images as ChatGPT's. Its paid plan, Google AI Plus, starts at $4.99 a month. ChatGPT Plus starts at $20 a month, and free ChatGPT users get only limited image creation.

Grok and Claude

Grok, from xAI, is known for a cinematic look and a feature that turns still images into short videos. It is the only mainstream image tool with a "Spicy" mode that allows suggestive content others block. Earlier this year xAI limited image generation to paid users after the tool was used to make sexually explicit deepfakes. One review found little in the way of a free plan.

Claude, from Anthropic, has no image model. Anthropic's help center says it does not generate photos or illustrations the way image tools do. It can build charts, diagrams and simple graphics, and it can write detailed prompts to paste into ChatGPT or Gemini.

What to do

  • Start with Gemini's free tier for social posts, product shots and ads.
  • Pay for ChatGPT only if you need the top quality and accurate prompt following.
  • Use Grok for quick batches of concept images or image-to-video ideas.
  • Use Claude for charts and diagrams, not photos.

Other tools exist too. Midjourney stays popular for artistic images, and Ideogram is known for text rendering.

The takeaway

Try Gemini's free tier first, and pay for ChatGPT only if you need the best image quality.
