OpenAI plans to combine the Chat and Work tabs in the ChatGPT desktop app into a single window. Right now they are separate. Chat is for quick questions, and Work is for tasks with many steps. TechCrunch reported the plan on November 2, citing an email OpenAI sent to users.

What changes

The idea is that a simple chat can turn into a bigger project without you switching sections. You could start by talking through an idea, add files or plugins, and then ask the assistant to build a website or prepare a presentation. You may also be able to hand off web-based tasks and track their progress.

  • Chat and Work merge into one desktop experience.
  • Codex, the coding tool, stays a separate section.
  • ChatGPT and Codex share one usage allowance.

The usage catch

OpenAI does not expect the shared allowance to affect most people. How fast you use it up depends on the model you pick and how complex each task is. Anyone who leans on both ChatGPT and Codex, especially for demanding coding work, may reach the limit sooner and should keep an eye on their usage.

What is not known yet

OpenAI will test the combined view with a small group of users first to collect feedback. It has not shared a date for a wider release, so most people will have to wait. The material does not say how much the shared limit is or how it will be displayed.

The takeaway

If you use both ChatGPT and Codex a lot, watch your usage once the shared limit arrives, since you could reach your cap sooner.
