OpenAI has started rolling out Locked Chats in ChatGPT. You can protect a conversation with a four-digit PIN, and on supported devices with Face ID or Touch ID. It is meant for people who share a phone or computer at home or at work and do not want others to stumble on private chats.
What changed
A locked chat is kept, but it moves into its own section called Locked Chats. That section is separate from your normal chat history, your pinned chats and the in-app search. Someone borrowing your device will not see those chats in any of those places.
This is different from a temporary chat. A temporary chat does not show up in your history at all. A locked chat is saved and waiting for you behind the lock.
Locked Chats also has its own memory. What ChatGPT picks up inside that section is kept apart from the memory used in your regular chats.
What it does not do
- It is not end-to-end encryption, and it is not a separate encrypted vault on OpenAI's servers.
- It does not change how long OpenAI keeps your data.
- It does not delete anything already recorded in ChatGPT.
- It keeps your existing setting on sharing data to improve the model.
In short, the lock hides chats on your screen. It is not a promise that OpenAI cannot reach them.
A warning about the PIN
If you reset your PIN, every locked chat and attachment protected by the old PIN is permanently erased. It cannot be recovered. Pick a PIN you will remember. OpenAI also says some session types are not covered by the lock, though the material does not say which ones.
Who gets it
Locked Chats is available on most plans: Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. The one exception is the specialized healthcare segment, which has its own binding standards. The rollout is happening in phases across supported platforms, so it may not appear in your app right away.
What to do
If you share a device, move chats about health, money or personal plans into Locked Chats once the option appears. Do not treat it as a way to keep information from the company. Anything you would not want OpenAI to hold is better left out of ChatGPT.
The takeawayLocked Chats hides private conversations from people using your device, but it does not hide them from OpenAI, and resetting your PIN erases them for good.
