OpenAI is merging the Chat and Work tabs in the ChatGPT desktop app into a single screen. It told users about the change in an email. The goal is to make the app less confusing, since it currently splits things across several sections and tabs.
What changed
Today the desktop app has ChatGPT and Codex sections. Inside ChatGPT, there are separate Chat and Work tabs. OpenAI says the merged screen lets you go from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, all in one place. You can bring in files and plugins, then ask it to build a website, create a presentation or do tasks on the web while you review and guide its work.
Codex, OpenAI's coding tool, stays a separate section. But ChatGPT and Codex will now draw from the same allowance pool. OpenAI says most users will not notice. Depending on how much you use and which model you pick, some people may wait for limits to reset more often.
What is not known yet
The new screen starts with select users so OpenAI can collect feedback. The email did not say when everyone gets it, or how those users were chosen. It also did not say how large the shared allowance is. Anthropic merged the chat and Cowork functions in Claude into one screen in September.
The takeawayIf you use ChatGPT for work, expect a simpler screen, and keep an eye on usage limits now that ChatGPT and Codex share one pool.
