ChatGPT is getting a feature called Locked Chats. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, announced that users can move individual conversations into a protected space. Those chats will not show up in the regular history or in search.
What changed
On the web and on computers, opening a locked chat requires a PIN code. On supported devices, you can use Face ID, Touch ID or your device unlock instead. Experts describe the PIN as four digits.
OpenAI also said new messages in locked chats will not affect the memory used in regular conversations. That memory is what ChatGPT draws on in your everyday chats. The feature will roll out gradually to all plans, both paid and free.
What it does not do
Experts note an important limit. Locked chats do not offer end-to-end encryption. That is the kind of protection that keeps even the service provider from reading messages. The feature also does not change how models are trained or how long conversations are kept.
In plain terms, this keeps a chat away from people who use your screen or device. It does not make the chat invisible to the company. The material does not say when each user will get the feature.
The takeawayLocked Chats hides conversations from casual view, but it is not encryption, so still avoid typing anything you would not want exposed.
