Canva has released Affinity for iPad, a free design app that handles drawing, vector art, photo editing and page layout in one place. It also adds a new Sketch Studio made for touch and Apple Pencil. The app is a free download from the App Store, but you need a free Canva account to use it.

What it does

Affinity combines tools that used to live in three separate apps: Affinity Designer, Photo and Publisher. Canva merged them into one app for Mac and Windows last year. The iPad version follows that approach. You can switch between Sketch, Vector, Pixel and Layout studios while working on the same file.

  • Sketch Studio offers freehand drawing with a customizable brush library.
  • Sketch to Shapes turns hand-drawn forms into editable vector shapes.
  • Photo tools include RAW editing and adjustments that do not damage the original.
  • Layout tools cover multi-page documents, master pages and print-ready output.

A Mask Tool is meant to help trace tricky edges, such as hair and fur, with Apple Pencil. Canva says the interface was designed for iPad, not shrunk down from the desktop app. Apple Pencil Pro features such as barrel roll, squeeze and hover are supported, along with pressure and tilt.

What costs money

The core sketching, vector, photo and layout tools are free for individuals. The only paid features are the AI tools, which need a Canva premium plan. They run through Canva AI Studio.

  • Generative Expand
  • Image upscaling
  • Noise reduction
  • Decompose Layer, which splits a flat image into editable layers

What is missing

The files use the same .af format as the desktop app, so you can open an iPad project on a computer. Still, some desktop features are not in the iPad version yet. Affinity's website lists Books, Batch, Data Merge, Quick Adjustments, macro recording and Astrophotography Studio among them. Canva plans to add more features over time.

Who it is for

Anyone who makes flyers, edits photos or builds social posts and owns an iPad now has a free option. The app requires iPadOS 18.0 or later. Canva says the desktop app has drawn more than seven million sign-ups since its relaunch.

The takeaway

If you have an iPad running iPadOS 18 or later, you can try Affinity free with a Canva account, and only the AI tools cost extra.
