Apple's next iPad mini is expected to get a better screen and a much faster chip, and it may cost about $200 more. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says the starting price could be $799, up from $599 today. None of this is confirmed by Apple. It comes from rumors reported by 9to5Mac.
What is rumored
- An OLED screen, with more vibrant colors, better contrast and a brighter display.
- An A20 Pro chip with 12GB of memory, up from the A17 Pro with 8GB.
- About 60% faster for general tasks and 166% faster for graphics.
- A new casing and redesigned speakers to keep water out.
If the water resistance rumor is right, this would be the first water-resistant iPad. The extra memory is also meant to let the tablet run Apple's most advanced AI models on the device itself. That could mean better voice and dictation features with Siri AI.
What is still unknown
It is unclear whether the screen will refresh at 120Hz, which makes scrolling look smoother. It may stay at 60Hz. The OLED panel also will not be the Tandem OLED used in the iPad Pro. It is also unclear whether the $799 model would still start with 128GB of storage.
What it means for buyers
This would be the first major iPad mini overhaul since 2021 and the first chip update since 2024. If you want a small iPad and mostly browse, read and watch video, the current $599 model may be the better deal. The new one makes sense if the screen and speed are worth about $200 more to you.
The takeawayIf you want a small iPad, wait for Apple's official price before buying, since the current $599 model may be the better value.
