Apple will soon require app makers to say whether their apps share a user's real-world location or offer dating features. The rule starts November 16 for the App Store. Apple says the goal is to assign each app the right age rating.
What changed
Developers must complete two disclosures: Shared Location and Dating and Relationships. The dating disclosure applies to any app that allows dating or relationship connections. That includes connections with a virtual companion that engages in sexual or romantic content, not only real people.
- Apps with Dating and Relationships must have a minimum age rating of 18+.
- Shared Location apps may not see a change to their minimum rating in some regions.
- In Brazil, Shared Location requires an A16 rating and Dating and Relationships requires A18.
Some Brazilian apps may qualify for a lower rating, such as an app that lets parents and children share location. Those apps can request a rating from Brazil's Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
What is not known yet
Developers have until January 12, 2027, to submit both disclosures through App Store Connect, Apple's tool for managing apps. The material does not say how Apple will check the answers. It also does not say what happens to apps that miss the deadline. For parents, the likely effect is clearer age ratings on apps that involve dating or location sharing.
The takeawayApps with dating features must be rated 18+, and developers must submit both new disclosures to Apple by January 12, 2027.
