Apple has announced four updated products: a MacBook Pro with an OLED screen, a new iPad mini, an iMac with the new M6 chip, and an updated entry 14-inch MacBook Pro. The big price detail is on the OLED laptops, which start at $2,899 for the 14-inch and $3,399 for the 16-inch.

The OLED MacBook Pro

OLED is a screen type where each pixel makes its own light. The new MacBook Pro uses a tandem OLED display. A Dynamic Island, the pill-shaped area first seen on iPhones, replaces the notch. It gives access to Live Activities, Siri AI and more.

  • The 14-inch model weighs 3 pounds and the 16-inch weighs 4 pounds.
  • The larger screen grows to 16.3 inches.
  • The illuminated Apple logo returns.
  • Maximum storage doubles to 16TB.
  • Speakers get 50% deeper bass.

The chips are the same M5 Pro and M5 Max introduced earlier this year, though the cooling system is redesigned. The prices are a $400 premium over comparable mini-LED versions, which use an older type of screen.

The new iPad mini

The iPad mini moves from an 8.3-inch LCD screen to an 8.5-inch OLED one. Peak HDR brightness reaches 1,200 nits. The 256GB and 512GB models offer a nano-texture option. At 5.4mm thick, it is thinner and lighter. It is also the first iPad with an official IP67 rating, meaning it resists water and dust.

The screen stays at 60Hz, so it lacks the smoother ProMotion motion found on some other Apple screens. The A20 Pro chip is the engine inside. Apple claims up to 60% faster CPU performance, 2.7 times faster graphics and 4.5 times faster AI performance than the last model. It starts at $699 in Midnight or Starlight. A $79 TechWoven Smart Folio cover is sold separately.

iMac and entry MacBook Pro

The M6 iMac replaces the M4 model. It adds two CPU and GPU cores, Wi-Fi 7 and 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, and storage that is up to twice as fast. It starts at $1,499, and the four-port version starts at $1,699.

The entry 14-inch MacBook Pro moves from M5 to M6 with a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU. Its $1,999 starting price and battery life of up to 24 hours stay the same.

What to weigh

For laptop and tablet shoppers, the question is whether a better screen is worth about $400 more on the MacBook Pro. The OLED model keeps the M5 chips, while the cheaper entry model gets the newer M6. The source material does not say when these products ship or go on sale, so check Apple's site for availability.

The takeaway

The OLED MacBook Pro costs $400 more than comparable older-screen models, so decide whether a better display is worth it before you buy.
