Apple's new tvOS 27.2 update lets four HomePod speakers work as surround sound with an Apple TV 4K, with no separate sound system needed.
Apple has released tvOS 27.2, an update for the Apple TV 4K that adds surround sound using four HomePod speakers. If you already own HomePods, you may be able to get theater-style sound from them. It is the first major update to tvOS 27, the software that runs the Apple TV 4K.
The update supports four-speaker surround sound. That means sound comes from speakers placed around the room, not just from the front. It works with the HomePod, the HomePod mini 2 and the upcoming Apple TV 4K. There are three ways to set it up:
Open Settings on the Apple TV, then go to System and choose Software Update. If you have automatic updates turned on, the Apple TV will install tvOS 27.2 by itself.
The HomePod mini 2 launches on October 30. The fourth-generation Apple TV 4K comes out on November 13. The source does not give prices for either one.
It also does not say how setup works, or whether every current Apple TV 4K can use the feature before the new model arrives. Anyone planning to buy speakers for this should wait for those details first.
If you own HomePods, update your Apple TV in Settings, and check setup details before buying more speakers for surround sound.
