Android Auto keeps asking who to call, even after you tell it

Android Auto reportedly keeps asking who to call even after Gemini hears the name, a bug that can make hands-free calling in the car frustrating.

Some Android owners say hands-free calling in the car has stopped working the way it should. According to Android Authority, Google's Gemini assistant understands the contact name you say out loud, but Android Auto then asks who to call again. It does this over and over instead of placing the call.

What is happening

Android Auto is Google's system that puts your phone's key features on a car's built-in screen. Gemini is Google's AI assistant, which handles voice requests. In this case, Gemini appears to do its part and recognize the name. The trouble comes after that, when Android Auto does not move ahead and make the call.

Who it affects

Android Authority says owners of Pixel phones and Samsung Galaxy phones are reporting the problem. Anyone who uses voice commands to call people while driving could run into it.

What is not known yet

The material does not say how many people are affected. It also does not explain the cause, name specific phone or app versions, or say whether Google has acknowledged the problem. No fix or release date has been announced.

What to do

Until a fix arrives, have a backup plan for making calls in the car.

  • Pull over when it is safe and place the call by hand.
  • Tap the contact on the screen instead of using your voice.
  • Avoid repeating the command again and again while driving.
The takeaway

If Android Auto will not place a voice call, pull over or tap the contact instead until Google fixes the problem.
