American Express and Airbnb have teamed up. Eligible American Express U.S. Card Members can now book Airbnb stays through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel App and earn rewards. The companies announced the deal in a press release on Thursday, Oct. 22.
What changed
More than 1 million Airbnb listings now appear in Amex Travel. They include city apartments, family homes and premium private residences, shown alongside American Express' hotel offerings. Eligible Card Members who meet the terms can earn Membership Rewards points, the Amex points program, on prepaid bookings.
U.S. Consumer and Business Platinum Card Members can earn an annual $600 Lodging Credit and a new $250 statement credit, according to the release. The material does not spell out how those credits apply to Airbnb stays.
What is not clear yet
- Which cards besides Platinum count as eligible
- How many points a booking earns
- What the specific terms are for qualifying bookings
The release says only that bookings must be prepaid and that terms apply. Anyone planning a trip should read the details on AmexTravel.com before booking, since a stay booked another way may not earn points.
Howard Grosfield of American Express said the deal gives Card Members "more choice alongside the rewards, service and exceptional value" of membership.
The takeawayIf you carry an Amex card, check the terms on AmexTravel.com before booking an Airbnb to see whether your card and stay earn points.
