A free, open-source add-on called CLI-Anything lets the AI tool Claude Code operate apps that were never built to work with AI. XDA writer Mahnoor Faisal tested it on NotebookLM, Apple Music, Apple Notes and Spotify. For NotebookLM, the only request needed was "Let's try the NotebookLM one."
What it does
CLI-Anything is a toolkit that works with an AI coding agent. The agent studies how an app can be controlled, then builds a set of text commands for it. It also adds tests and instructions for using them. The finished tool is called a "harness."
The app still does the real work. The harness only gives the AI a way to ask the app for specific actions and read the results. Depending on the app, that could rely on its source code, an API (a built-in way for programs to talk to each other), or a scripting feature.
How the NotebookLM test went
CLI-Anything already includes ready-made tools, and NotebookLM had a community-built one. Claude installed it and opened a browser window so the writer could log in. Claude then listed the writer's notebooks.
Next, Claude was asked to find a notebook called "The Relational Model," list its sources, and explain primary keys versus foreign keys with an example. The answer came back in the same conversation, with references to the writer's own sources. NotebookLM still answered the question. Claude handled the back-and-forth.
Who can use it
This is aimed at people already comfortable with Claude Code, which runs in a terminal, a window where you type commands. CLI-Anything is available there as a plugin. It also works with other coding agents, including Codex, Cursor, OpenCode and GitHub Copilot CLI. The developer says support for more agents, such as Windsurf, is planned.
Installing it takes two commands typed inside Claude Code:
- /plugin marketplace add HKUDS/CLI-Anything
- /plugin install cli-anything
What is not clear yet
The writer also had Claude build custom tools for Apple Music, Apple Notes and Spotify. The material available here does not include how those tests turned out. Nothing is stated about reliability, safety or limits, so any app you connect deserves a careful first try.
The takeawayCLI-Anything can build AI controls for apps without them, but it suits people already using Claude Code, and the custom-built results are not yet known.
