Your iPhone has a free whiteboard app called Freeform, and it can turn a camera roll full of forgotten screenshots into a plan you can share. Apple has offered it on iPhones since 2022. Basic use costs nothing, and it does not need another subscription.

What Freeform does

Freeform is a digital whiteboard with an infinite canvas, which means the board keeps growing as you add to it. You can place photos, sketches, links, PDFs, videos and text boxes anywhere. Then you can draw arrows between related items, zoom out for the big picture or zoom in on details. A finger works for sketching. An Apple Pencil is not required.

Photos and Safari can send images and links straight to a board from the Share menu, so there is no copying and pasting. iPhone Duo owners running iOS 27.2 or later can also sketch with the Apple Pencil (USB-C).

Where it helps

  • Storyboard a video with reference images and notes for each shot, then shuffle scenes.
  • Sketch a DIY project with drawings and measurements right where you need them.
  • Plan a vacation with a group instead of digging through message threads.

Not everything needs a whiteboard. A grocery list, for example, probably does not. Engadget notes that Freeform is not a miracle app, just a way to make a messy project less of a headache.

Sharing and limits

You can invite others to a board and see their changes in real time. Boards sync through iCloud to iPhone, iPad and Mac. Everyone on a board needs a compatible Apple device, an Apple Account with two-factor authentication, and Freeform turned on in iCloud.

There is no Android app and no browser-based editor. For mixed-device groups, Engadget suggests a cross-platform tool like Miro. If someone only needs to view the result, you can export the board as a PDF. Large boards can also be hard to move around on a small iPhone screen, while an iPad or Mac gives more room.

What it costs

Creating and sharing boards is free. Apple's optional Creator Studio plan costs $12.99 per month in the U.S. It adds premium assets and advanced AI image-generation tools on compatible iPhones, but it is not needed for basic brainstorming.

Freeform does not require Apple Intelligence, Apple's set of AI features. On compatible iPhones, Image Playground can create illustrations for boards. Freeform arrived with iOS 16.2 and gained Dark Mode and folders in iOS 27. If you deleted the app earlier, you can reinstall it from the App Store.

The takeaway

If your phone is full of screenshots you never revisit, open Freeform and drop them on a board, but plan on a PDF for anyone without Apple devices.
