Apple now lets you find a lost Apple TV remote with your iPhone. The change comes with Apple's latest iOS release and covers second-generation Siri Remotes from 2021 and later. It was first pitched as a perk of the newest Apple TV, but it now reaches older remotes too.

How it works

Open the Find My app and go to the Devices section. Any Siri Remotes tied to your account should appear next to your other Apple devices. Tap Find and a radar screen shows you which way to look, the same as with other Apple products. Before this, you could only find the remote through Control Center.

What the new remote adds

  • Full Precision Finding, which points you straight to the hiding spot instead of just estimating distance
  • A built-in speaker that plays a chime
  • Microphones on the new Apple TV, so a voice command can locate the remote hands-free

These extras are described for the new Siri Remote. The report does not say whether older remotes get them.

The price question

The new Apple TV 4K goes on sale Nov. 13 at $300. Earlier generations historically cost between $129 and $199. Roku and Amazon still sell streaming devices for as low as $30.

What is not clear

The report does not name the exact iOS version, so check your iPhone for the newest update. It also does not say whether first-generation remotes work. Only second-generation remotes from 2021 and later are listed.

The takeaway

If your Siri Remote is from 2021 or later, update your iPhone and look for it under Devices in the Find My app.
