A fatal car accident in Punjab's Jalandhar district has put a spotlight on a safety feature built into many iPhones. Apple's Crash Detection can contact emergency services on its own after a severe crash. It is on by default, but checking that it is still on takes about a minute.
What happened
Two young men died in the accident, including Divit Auluck, a nephew of singer Yo Yo Honey Singh. The other was Aarav Talwar. Three others were injured. Police say the car hit a stationary municipal corporation tractor-trolley in the early hours of Sunday. The report does not say whether Crash Detection played a role in this crash.
How it works
When a supported iPhone or Apple Watch detects a severe vehicle collision, it shows an alert and sounds an alarm. If the person does not respond, a countdown starts. After that, the device calls emergency services. It can also notify emergency contacts and share the person's location.
- iPhone 14 and later models
- Apple Watch Series 8 and later
- Apple Watch SE (second generation)
- Apple Watch Ultra models
Whether a call goes through depends on the connection. It needs cellular service, supported Wi-Fi calling, or satellite connectivity where available.
How to check the setting
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap Emergency SOS.
- Find Call After Severe Crash and make sure it is switched on.
On supported Apple Watch models, Crash Detection can be checked in the Emergency SOS settings.
Add emergency contacts
Apple recommends setting up Medical ID and emergency contacts in the Health app. Open Health, tap your profile picture and choose Medical ID. Tap Edit, scroll to Emergency Contacts, add the people you want notified, then save. Anyone who drives, or has a family member who does, may want to do this.
Crash Detection is an extra layer of help. It does not replace safe driving, and it cannot guarantee that emergency help will reach you in every situation.
