The Xiaomi 17T is a phone that does the everyday things very well, according to a Digital Trends review. The reviewer used it as a main phone for more than two months, including trips to Taiwan and Hawaii. The big wins are a 6,500mAh battery described as an absolute champ, a bright 120Hz screen and a 5x zoom camera.

What stands out

The battery gets the loudest praise. The phone also has a 50-megapixel telephoto camera with native 5x optical zoom, meaning it zooms with real lens glass, not just by cropping the picture. The reviewer called the camera system the icing on the cake. Everyday speed felt close to flagship level, even though the phone is not a top-tier model.

Screen and build

The display is 6.59 inches, flat, and uses AMOLED, a screen type known for rich color. It refreshes up to 120 times a second, which makes scrolling look smooth, and supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+ for video. The reviewer had no real trouble reading it in bright sunlight.

Xiaomi advertises peak brightness of up to 3,500 nits, a measure of screen brightness. The review notes that this is a peak figure under specific conditions, not what the screen holds all the time.

  • IP68 rating for dust and water resistance
  • Corning Gorilla Glass 7i protecting the screen
  • Infrared blaster, so the phone can act as a TV remote
  • 200 grams and 8.17mm thick

Where it falls short

The review lists several flaws. The design is forgettable and could vanish next to similar Android phones. The frame is plastic, which some buyers at this price may not like. The ultra-wide camera does not always match the main camera's colors, portrait mode can misjudge edges, and the selfie camera is fine rather than great. The HyperOS 3 software is smooth and full of features but has room to improve.

What is not known

The part of the review available here does not give a price or on-sale dates. It also cuts off before the full performance and camera results. The tested phone was the Indian unit supplied by Xiaomi India. Specs, network support, colors and what comes in the box may differ by region, so check the version sold where you live.

The takeaway

If a phone's battery, screen and zoom camera matter more to you than looks, the Xiaomi 17T is worth a look, but check the price and specs in your region.
