Why every card machine at the store works a little differently

A New Jersey radio host says a store manager told him card machines differ on purpose to slow thieves. It is one claim, not a confirmed reason, but holiday shoppers should slow down.

Card machines at checkout rarely look or act the same, and one New Jersey store manager says that is deliberate. A radio host shared the manager's explanation: different setups make life harder for thieves. The host stresses this is one person's claim, not a confirmed reason.

What the manager said

Mike Brant, a weekend host and content contributor at New Jersey 101.5, wrote about the quirks shoppers notice. One machine lets you skip the PIN with a green button. Another uses yellow or red. Some ask about cash back first. Others ask whether you want credit or debit.

According to the manager, programming machines differently makes it harder for hackers and thieves to steal card information. If every machine worked the same way, the thinking goes, a thief could crack the code more easily and reach personal details.

What is not known

Brant says plainly that he is not confirming this is the real reason, and that he does not know why the machines differ. The post quotes no payment company, bank or store owner. The claim is unverified. It is a logical idea, in his words, but still only one manager's view.

The timing matters. Holiday shopping, from Thanksgiving dinner to gifts, means more card swipes than usual. Unfamiliar machines will come up more often, and the rush to leave a store is when people tap buttons without reading. Slow down, read each prompt, then pay.

The takeaway

At any unfamiliar card machine, slow down and read each prompt before you press a button, especially during holiday shopping.
