WhatsApp is reportedly testing a way to tap a phone number, date or address in a chat and act on it right there. The feature is called Smart Text Actions. WhatsApp has not officially announced it.
What it does
According to WABetaInfo, the feature spots phone numbers, dates, times, email addresses and street addresses in single and group chats. It works on messages you send and messages you receive. Detected text gets a dotted underline. Tapping it opens a menu, with the detected text shown at the top so you can check it. You can also long-press a message to see the suggestions.
- Phone number: copy it, save it to contacts or dial it.
- Date or time: copy it, add it to your calendar or create an event.
- Address: open it in a maps app for directions.
- Email address: start a message in your default email app.
Who gets it and what is unknown
The feature is reportedly rolling out slowly to select users on the latest WhatsApp versions for Android and iPhone. No one has to use it. You can ignore the underlined text and keep chatting as usual. Some of these actions already existed, and this puts them in a tidier menu.
WhatsApp is also reportedly testing a prompt that asks whether a suggestion was useful. WhatsApp has not confirmed a launch. The report does not say when everyone will get the feature.
The takeawayIf your WhatsApp starts underlining numbers and addresses, that is Smart Text Actions, and you can safely ignore it if you do not want it.
