WhatsApp is testing a way to choose how long disappearing messages stay in a chat. Test versions of the app now show three timer choices: 24 hours, seven days or 90 days. WhatsApp has not given a release date.

What changed

Disappearing messages are a privacy setting WhatsApp introduced in November 2020. Messages vanish from a chat on their own after a set time. Until now, that time has been fixed at seven days. The new choices, reported by WABetaInfo, would let people clear chats faster or keep them longer.

Signal, a rival messaging app, offers more: 30 seconds, five minutes, one hour, eight hours, a day, a week or a month. After the feature launched, a spokesperson for Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, said seven days strikes a balance between messages not lasting and being able to remember what a conversation is about.

When it might arrive

A feature in a beta, which is an early test version of an app, does not mean a public release is close. The 24-hour option first appeared in a beta back in April. The 90-day option showed up in a beta released on Wednesday. The options will probably reach everyone one day, but how soon is unknown.

The takeaway

WhatsApp may let you pick 24 hours, seven days or 90 days for disappearing messages, but it is only in testing and has no release date.
