WhatsApp appears to be building a way for Android users to peek at a chat without the sender seeing the blue ticks. Code found in a test version of the app points to a preview card that opens when you press and hold a conversation. iPhone users already have a version of this.
What changed
The code was spotted in WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.26.44.12. Reporters found it by digging into the app's files, a process called a teardown. Today, pressing and holding a chat on Android only selects it and shows options to pin, archive, mute or delete.
The new version would show a floating card with recent messages, with a refreshed menu underneath. On iPhone, the preview cannot scroll. The Android one may scroll, so you could read older messages without opening the chat.
Why it matters
Read receipts are the blue ticks that tell a sender you have read their message. You can switch them off completely, but then you also stop seeing them for others. Notifications are another workaround, though they are easy to dismiss or lose in a pile. A preview would offer a middle path.
What is not known
- It is not available to public beta testers yet.
- WhatsApp has not said when it might reach the regular app.
- Features found in teardowns do not always launch.
For now, treat it as a possibility, not a promise.
The takeawayA message preview that skips read receipts may come to WhatsApp on Android, but nothing is confirmed and there is no release date.
