WhatsApp is rolling out a feature on Android and iPhone that suggests your newest photo or video as soon as you open a chat. A small preview appears above the typing bar, so you can share without digging through your gallery. Bloom Pakistan reported the update on November 5, 2026.
What it does
The thumbnail sits above the chat bar. For some users, it may temporarily replace the camera icon. Tapping it does not send anything. WhatsApp first opens its editing screen, where you can make changes, add a caption or add stickers before sharing. If you do not want to send it, ignore it and keep chatting.
The suggestion can be any recently saved file. That includes regular photos, screenshots, and videos downloaded or saved from other apps. A screenshot you just took could therefore show up on your own screen when you open a chat.
How to turn it off
WhatsApp switches the feature on automatically once it reaches your account. To turn it off, use this path:
- Open WhatsApp Settings.
- Tap Chats.
- Switch off Recent Media Suggestion.
WhatsApp says the rollout is gradual, and more Android and iPhone users should get it over the coming weeks. The report does not say exactly when any one account will see it, and it does not mention a cost.
The takeawayIf you would rather not see your latest photos pop up in chats, switch off Recent Media Suggestion under Settings > Chats once it appears.
