WhatsApp can now show you more about a stranger who messages you. The app can display whether you share any groups with the sender and which country their phone number is registered in. The goal is to help you spot a possible scam before you reply.
What changed
The extra details appear when an unknown person writes to you. They may also appear the first time you message someone who is not in your contacts. With that information, you can keep chatting, add the person to your contacts, block them or report the account.
WhatsApp also lets you control who sees your profile photo, your last seen time and when you are online. You can choose who can add you to groups, and you can turn off read receipts. The company advises care with what you share, since recipients can save messages, photos and videos and forward them.
What is not known yet
The material does not say when the feature reaches all users or whether every phone gets it at once. It also does not say whether you can switch it off. A separate update is coming that will recognize phone numbers, dates, addresses and email addresses in chats and offer actions like calling or adding a calendar event. No date was given.
The takeawayBefore answering an unknown number on WhatsApp, check the country and shared groups it shows, then decide whether to reply, block or report.
