WhatsApp guest calling lets someone join a video call from a computer browser with no account, which makes quick chats with clients or freelancers easier.

WhatsApp now lets people join a video call without having a WhatsApp account. A guest opens a link in a computer browser, types in a name and waits for the host to let them in. It moves the app a step closer to Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet.

What changed

The feature is called guest calling. Calls are free and have no time limit. They are end-to-end encrypted, which means the call is scrambled so only the people on it can follow it. One-to-one and group calls both work, with up to 32 people.

The host needs a WhatsApp account to start. They open the Calls tab, tap the "+" icon and create a call link to share. Guests do not need an account.

  • Guests cannot see other people's phone numbers.
  • Guests cannot send messages or add someone else to the call.
  • The host can remove a guest at any point.
  • Guests can share their computer screen, use emoji reactions and raise a hand.

What is not known yet

WhatsApp plans to add Google and Outlook calendar connections later this year. Users would link their account through a plugin and add call links to invitations. The material does not say exactly when guest calling reaches everyone or whether it is open in every country.

HardwareZone's view is that guest calling is not enough to replace the main meeting apps. For a quick talk with a freelancer or a small group, though, it can work as a simple alternative.

The takeaway

Hosts still need WhatsApp, but anyone can now join a call from a browser link, which suits quick chats with clients or freelancers.
